The Shadows는 1958년에 Ken Pavey , Terry Smart, Norman Mitham, Ian Samwell

그리고 Harry Webb (Cliff Richard의 본명) 으로 결성되어 The Drifters, 그리고 그후에는

Cliff Richard and the Drifters라는 이름으로 활동하였으나 미국에 이미 The Drifters라는 그룹이 있어

1959년 리드 기타리스트인 Hank Marvin을 영입하며 The Shadows로 개명하였다.

Cliff Richard의 백 밴드로 그리고 그후에는 독립 락밴드로 최근까지 활동한 The Shadows는

리드 기타리스트인 Hank Marvin의 깨끗하고 영롱한 비브라토 기타연주가 많은 팬들의 마음을 사로잡았다.
