Chris de Burgh / The Girl With April In Her Eyes

 

Chris de Burgh가 직접 작사 작곡하여 부른 어느 가련한 소녀에 대한 노래입니다. 4월의 눈동자를 가졌던 그녀를 받아주었더라면 그의 왕국에는 따뜻한 4월 봄날이 왔었을건만. 아름답지만 슬픈 동화같은  곡... 가사를 음미하며 감상해 보시기 바랍니다. 1948년 Argentina에서 본명 Christopher John Davison으로 태어난 영국의 가수겸 송라이터 이곡은 Chris de Burgh의 1979년 4집앨범 Crusader 수록곡으로 큰 히트는 못했지만 우리나라에서는 많은 사랑을 받은곡이다.

 

There once was a king, who called for the spring, For his world was still covered with snow, But the spring had not been, for he was wicked and mean, In his winter fields nothing would grow; 옛날 옛적에 봄을 갈구하던 왕이 있었지요. 그의 나라가 항상 눈으로 덮여 있었기 때문이었어요. 그러나 사악하고 야비한 그의 왕국에는 봄이 오지 않았고  그 왕국의 차디찬 들판에는 아무 식물도 자라지 못했답니다. And when a traveller called, seeking help at the door, Only food and a bed for a night, He ordered his slave to turn her away, The girl with April in her eyes... 하루는 그의 왕국을 지나가는 한 나그네가 문을 두드렸답니다. 그리고 먹을 것과 하룻밤만 재워주기를 청했지요. 그러나 왕은 노예를 시켜 나그네를 내쫒았습니다. 4월의 눈동자를 지닌 그 소녀를.... Oh, oh, oh, on and on she goes, Through the winters night, the wild wind and the snow, Hi, hi, hi, on and on she rides, Someone help the girl with April in her eyes... 아, 모진 바람과 눈보라 속에 그녀는 차가운 겨울밤을 지새도록 달렸습니다. 말을 타고 이랴~ 이랴~ 정처없이 4월의 눈동자를 지닌 그 소녀 도와줄이 그누구 없을까... She rode through the night till she came to the light, Of a humble mans home in the woods, He brought her inside, by the firelight she died, And he buried her gently and good; 그녀는 밤새도록 말을 달린 끝에 불빛을 발견했지요. 그리고 어느 남자가 사는 숲속의 초라한 집앞에 도착했지요. 집주인은 그녀를 집안으로 들였지만 그녀는 난로 옆에서 숨을 거두었고 그사나이는 정성을 다해 그녀를 묻어주었지요. Oh the morning was bright, all the world snow-white, But when he came to the place where she lay, His field was ablaze with flowers on the grave, Of the girl with April in her eyes... 흰눈이 뒤덮힌 세상의 어느날, 맑은 아침이었습니다. 그가 그녀의 무덤에 찾아와 보니 4월의 눈동자를 지닌 그녀의 무덤위에는 아름다운 꽃들이 찬란하게 피어났지요.
