Beautiful Dreamer

미국의 작곡가 Stephen Collins Foster(1926~64) 가 극심한  가난에 쫓기다가 세상을

떠나기 불과 4일 전에  작곡했다고  알려진 이 노래는 그의 사후 두달후인 1964년 3월에

발표되었고 우리나라 중등학교 교과서에 실리는 등 우리말 가사로도 널리 애창되는 노래이다.

포스터는 거의 독학으로 음악을 배웠다는데 세계적으로 애창되는 수 많은 곡을 썼으니 

천재적인 음악 재능을 타고 났던 것이다.  그러나 그의 일생은 결코 행복하지 못했던  것  같다.
 24세에 결혼하였지만 악보의 인세가 수입의 전부였던 그의 생활은 극히 어려웠고, 

생활자세도 바르지 못해 아내는 결혼 6년만에 떠나버리고,  포스터는 뉴욕 빈민가에서

 비참한 나날을 보내다가 38세에 생을 마감했다고 한다. 
맨하튼의 한 호텔방에서 쓰러져 죽었을 때 그에게는 단돈 38센트가 남아 있었다고 한다.

 

그는 "Oh! Susanna", "Hard Times Come Again No More", "Camptown Races",

"Old Folks at Home" ("Swanee River"), "My Old Kentucky Home",

"Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair", "Old Black Joe" "Beautiful Dreamer"등

총 200곡이 넘는 곡들을 작곡하였다.

 

*참고로 Stephen은 스테판이라고 읽는 사람들이 많은데 정확한 발음은 스티븐이라고

발음하며 때로는 Steven으로 표기하기도 한다.

Beautiful Dreamer는 Foster가 죽기 며칠전에 작곡되고 사후에 발표된 곡으로 알려졌는데
Carol Kimball등 일부는 Foster가 죽기전 2년전에 이미 작곡되었다고 주장한다.
세상의 고난과 현실을 잊은체 깊은 잠에 빠져있는 여인을 노래한 이곡은 아마도 죽은 연인을

애도하는 내용이 아닌가 추측케 한다.

이곡은 1940년 Bing Crosby, The Nutmegs, Steve Conway, Thomas Hampson, Slim Whiman,

Roy Orbison, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, Beatles등 수많은 가수들과 뮤지션들에 의해 발표되고

연주되었고 Gone with the Wind (1939); Second Chorus (1940); Shane (1953); Goin' South (1978);

Duel in the Sun; The Night of the Grizzly; She Done Him Wrong (1933); Picnic (1955);
The Death Collector (1976); How to Make an American Quilt (1995); Batman (1989);
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947)등의 영화에도 삽입되었다.
