어버이날이 다가오면 생각나는 아름다운 Country & Western 한 곡을 소개합니다. 이곡은 1977년 C.W. McCall, 그리고 Red Sovine에 의해 발표된 곡으로
C.W. McCall의 버젼은 빌보드 컨츄리 챠트 2위에 올랐다.
이 노래를 처음 듣게된 것은 90년대 말로 발표된지 20년이 지나서야
처음으로 알게 되었는데 노래를 처음 듣는 순간 가수의 목소리도 좋았지만

Well, I had two weeks vacation comin', so I thought I'd drive down to Florida spend some time with an old friend, date a few girls, make a few parties, and just kinda live it up again. (2주간의 휴가를 얻어 친구들과 플로리다로 여행을 떠나 여자들과 어울려 파티도하고 기분전환을 할 계획을 세웠다)
So I packed up my car, and then I called my Mom in Tennesee, and told her what I planned to do. She said, "Son, are you comin' by?" And I said, "Mom, I'm really pushed for time, but I'll see you in a week or two." (테네시의 어머니께 전화를 드려 휴가 계획을 말씀 드렸더니 가는 길에 들리지 않겠느냐고 물으셨다 시간이 빠듯해 어떨지 모르겠지만 1~2주 후에 들려보도록 노력해 보겠다고 했다)
And I was drivin' through this little town in Georgia when I remembered: today's Mama's birthday. Well, I thought I'll just stop and wire some flowers. Shouldn't take too long; then I'll be on my way. (조지아주를 지나칠 때 오늘이 어머니의 생일이라는 것을 기억하고 꽃집에 들려 꽃다발을 보내드려야 하겠다고 마음먹었다 빨리 처리하고 가면 시간계획에 큰 차질은 없을 것이라고 생각하며)
So I walked in a flower shop and the first thing I saw was this little boy, with his eyes full a' tears. I said, "What's wrong, son?" He said, "Mama loves roses. And today's her birthday, and I haven't seen her in almost a year." (어느 꽃집에 들어서니 작은 소년 하나가 눈물을 글썽이며 서있는 모습이 첫눈에 들어왔다 "애야 왜 그러니?" 물었다 "오늘이 우리 엄마 생일이에요. 만나 본지 1년이 되는데 엄마가 장미꽃을 좋아하거든요." 그가 대답했다)

He said, "I live with Grandma now. But I promised Mama some roses, 'cause I talk to her all the time. I wanted to give her five, 'cause that's how old I am. Well, the little fella's story kind a' touched my heart, so I told the lady to give him what he wanted and charge it to me. Then I told her I needed to wire a dozen roses to my Mama, up in Tennessee. (소년이 안쓰러워 내가 돈을 지불할테니 그가 원하는 만큼의 장미를 주라고 말했다. 그리고 어머니에게는 장미 12송이를 보내달라고 주문했다.)
I looked around, and the little boy was gone. But all of a sudden the door flew open and he come runnin' back in and he said, "Mister, I forgot to thank you for the roses. " He smiled, he shook my hand, and ran back out again. (소년은 사라졌다. 그러나 갑자기 문이 열리며 그 소년이 돌아와 "아저씨, 고맙다는 말씀드리는 것을 깜빡했네요"라고 하면서 나의 손을 잡더니 다시 뛰쳐 나갔다.)
Well, I started on out of town. And I was feelin' real proud of myself for thinkin' of my Mama and really carin', when I looked out the window and I saw that same little boy, kneelin', by a grave in an old cemetery. (어머니에게 효도했다는 뿌듯한 마음으로 도시를 떠날 때 차창 밖으로 그 소년이 공동묘지의 어느 묘 앞에 무릎 꿇고 있는 모습이 보였다.)
I stopped my car and walked over to where the little boy was kneelin' down. And he smiled up at me and said, "This is where my Mama stays. She says she sure does thank you for these pretty roses. " Well that's when I had to walk away. (나는 차를 세우고 그에게 다가갔다. 소년은 나를 보자 미소를 띄우고 이렇게 말했다. "여기가 우리 엄마가 계신 곳에요. 엄마가 아저씨께 감사하다는 말을 전해 달래요. 그의 말이 나의 가슴에 예리하게 다가왔다.)
And I drove straight back to that flower shop and I said, "Lady, have you sent those flowers to Tennessee?" She said, "No, not yet." I said, "Well, nevermind. I'll just take them back with me." (나는 곧장 꽃집으로 다시 돌아갔다. 조금 전 주문한 꽃을 보내셨나요?" 그녀는 아직 보내지 않았다고 대답했다. 잘됬네요. 꽃을 그냥 주세요. 제가 직접 가져가기로 마음을 바꿨으니까요.)

이 노래가 내 마음에 특히 와 닿았던 이유는 내가 외국에 살 때 이노래를 들었고 항상 바쁘다는 이유로 국제 통화료를 아낀다는 생각으로 부모님께 연락도 자주 못 드리고 있을 때였기 때문이리라. 어린 소년의 돌아가신 어머니에 대한 효성이 이러할진대 우리는 살아계신 어머님께 과연 얼마나 효도를 하고 있는지 한번 반성해 봐야겠습니다.
