태어난 컨츄리 싱거겸 작곡가로 주로 조용한 Narration 스타일의
Talk Song을 주로 하여 "Whispering Bill"이라는 별명을 얻음.
Mama Sang A Song 은 1962년 발표곡으로 그의 첫 컨츄리챠트 1위곡임.

가사가 특히 감동적인 노래입니다. 
오랜전 다른 블로그에 직접 번역을 하여 소개하였던 곡인데 너무나 감동적인 내용이라 이곳에 다시한번 소개합니다. -DAVID-
   

God put a song in the heart of an angel And softly she sang it to me 주님께서는 천사의 가슴에 노래를 심어 주셨고 그 천사는 나에게 부드러운 음성으로 불러주었다.   I get to thinking lots of times about back when I was a lad Of the old homeplace where I grew up Of the days both good and bad My overalls was a hand-me-downs My shoes were full of holes I used to walk four miles to school every day Through the rain and the sleet and the cold 나는 종종 어린시절과 살던 집동네를 회상합니다. 좋은 날도 있었고 힘든 날도 있었지요. 내가 입던 오버롤 옷(아래위가 붙은 옷)은 형들에게 물려받은 것이였고 신발은 온통 구멍 투성이였지요. 눈이오나 비가오나 추운 날씨에도 4마일씩을 걸어서 학교를 다니곤 했구요 I've seen the nights when my daddy would cry For the things that his family would need But all he ever got was a bad-land farm And seven hungry mouthes to feed  음식과 생필품이 부족할때 아버지께서는 밤에 혼자 몰래 우시곤 하셨지요.  손바닥 만한 황무지땅으로 아버지는 7명의 식구들을 먹여살려야만 했기 때문이였죠. And yet, and yet our home-fire never flickered once Cause when all these things went wrong Mama took the hymn-book down and mama sang a song 그럼에도 불구하고 우리가정의 신앙의 불길은 한번도 흔들린 적이 없었지요.  어려운 일이 생길 때마다 어머니께서 찬송가를 펴놓으시고 성가를 불러주셨기 때문입니다 WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS... 죄짐 맡은 우리 구주 어찌 좋은 친군지.. I've been rocked to sleep many a night To the tune of  WHAT A FRIEND... and come morning ROCK OF AGES would waken me gently once again And then daddy, he'd reach up and take the bible down And he read it, read it loud and long And I always felt that maybe our home was blessed When daddy would say "Mama sing a song" 수많은 나날을 나는 '죄짐맡은 우리 구주'라는 성가를 들으며 잠들었고 아침엔 부드러운 '만세반석' 노래소리에 깨어나곤 했었죠 아버지는 성경책을 꺼내 내려놓으시고 커다란 목소리로 오래동안 읽어주시곤 하였지요. 그리고 "여보 성가 한곡 불러봐요"라고 엄마에게 부탁할때 우리가정은 진정 축복받은 가정이라는 것을 느꼈습니다 Sister left home first, I guess And then BOB and then TOMMY and then DAN By then dad's hair was turning white And I had to be a mama's little man But it seemed that as daddy's back grew weak My Mother's faith just grew strong And those the grace days of all when mama sang a song 누나가 제일 먼저 집을 떠났고 BOB, TOMMY, 그리고 DAN 형이 떠났지요. 이미 아버지의 머리카락이 희끗해 지셨고 난 어렸지만 어머니의 믿음직한 아들 역활을 하였지요. 아버지가 나이들며 몸이 점점 나약해질수록  어머니의 신앙은 더욱 굳건해졌습니다  참으로 어머니가 성가를 불러주던 그시절  우리집은 주님의 은총으로 충만했던 시절이였지요. ROCK OF AGES CLEFT FOR ME LET ME HIDE MYSELF IN THEE 만세반석 열리니 나를 품안에 안아 주소서! I guess the house is still standing I don't get to go back much any more No voice is left to fill the halls And no steps to grace the floor For you see, my mother sings in heaven now Around God's golden throne But I'll always believe that This world is a better place Because one time my mama sang a song  우리 집은 아마도 그곳에 그대로 있을겁니다. 근래엔 거의 가보지는 못했지만... 이제는 더이상 성가 소리도 들을수 없고 사람들 발자욱 소리도 들을수 없겠지요.  어머니는 지금 천국 주님의 옆에서 부르시고 계시기 때문이죠. 어머니는 가셨지만 어머니가 불러주신 성가 덕분에 나는  이 세상이 보다 아름다운 세상이 되었다고 생각합니다.
