놀라운 자연의 세계 (1)

이하 8회에 걸쳐 연재하는 특별 기획 '놀라운 자연의 세계'는  어느 인터넷

사이트에서 발견한 원제  Season of Color라는 내용의 글을 직접 번역해 올리는 글이다.

내용도 사진도 흥미롭고 자연의 세계의 여러가지 면을 옅볼수 있어 많은 시간과

노력을 투자해 번역하고 재 구성해 올린다.

번역이 서투르더라도 많은 양해 부탁드린다.

The natural world is full of beauty, wonder, and mystery. Nature has the power to create life

and the power to take it away. As this collection of photographs show, the natural world is

full of surprises that can be destructive and deadly or amazing and inspiring. 

자연의 세계는 아름다움과 경이로움 그리고 신비함으로 가득하다.

자연은 생명을 창조하기도 하고 앗아가기도 한다.

아래의 사진들은 자연의 세계가 파괴적, 치명적이면서 놀랍고도

감동적이라는 것을 보여주고 있다.

1989년 프랑스 해안의 등대를 강타한 거대한 파도 - 등대지기는 생명을 건졌다.

In this now-famous photo snapped by Jean Guichard in 1989, a massive wave is nearly engulfing
the Phares dans la Tempete, la Jument, a lighthouse on the northwest coast of France,
near Brittany, that ironically translates to “Lighthouse in a storm.”
During this storm, the lighthouse keeper, Theodore Malgorne, may look like he is calmly watching
the monster waves, but he is actually awaiting rescue. Malgorne has a few colleagues tucked safely
in the lighthouse, out of harm’s way. Although it looks like the wall of water is powerful enough
to destroy the lighthouse, the structure received little damage and is still standing today.

 1989년 장 기차드가 촬영하여 유명해진 이 사진은 거대한 파도가 브리타니 근처 프랑스 북서쪽 해안의 등대인

파레스 단스 라 템페테를 거의 삼켜버리고 있다. 아이러니컬 하게도 이 등대 이름은 '폭풍속의 등대'라는 의미이다.

이 폭풍우 동안 등대지기인 시어도어 말고른은 태평하게 파도를 지켜보고 있는 것처럼 보일지 모르지만,

사실은 구조대원들을 기다리고 있는 중이다. 맬고른의 동료들은 등대안에 안전하게 자리를 잡고 있었다.

파도가 등대를 파괴 할만큼  강력해 보이지만 이 등대는 별 손상을 입지 않았으며

오늘날까지도 여전히 건재하고 있다.

This girl, reported to be Audra Thomas of Beaver City, Nebraska, looks calm and cool while

an F-1 tornado swirls behind her. Being a Nebraska girl, we are assuming that Audra is

no stranger to tornado activity. The twister looks like it is bearing down on her but it is actually

about a mile away. The funnel cloud is heading toward her family farm, shown in the background,

 and is destroyed a barn there. The National Weather Service frowns upon people taking selfies

 with twisters for safety reasons. We may look at this photo and think, “I’ll bet her mother was mad

 when she saw what her daughter was doing”, but it was Audra’s mother, Marrilee, that took the pic.   

 네브래스카 주 비버 시티의 오드라 토마스로 알려진이 소녀는 토네이도가 뒤에서 소용돌이

치는데도 차분하고 냉정해 보인다.

 네브래스카 소녀이기 때문에 오드라는 토네이도에 익숙해졌으리나 생된다. 

 토네이도는 마치 그녀를 곧 덮칠 것처럼 보이지만 실제로는 약 1 마일 떨어져 있다.

깔때기 구름은 뒷편에 위치하고 있는 그녀의 가족 농장으로 향하고 헛간은 결국 파괴된다.

국립 기상청은 안전상의 이유로 토네이도를 배경으로 셀카를 찍는 사람들을 좋아하지 않을텐데

많은 사람들은  "딸이 토네이도를 배경으로 사진을 담는 것을 보았다면 그녀의 어머니가 화를 냈을 것"

이라고 생각하겠지만 이 사진을 찍은 사람은 바로 오드라의 어머니인 메리 리로 알려졌다.

FREEDOM! Let’s call this pig Wilber, after the pig in “Charlotte’s Web” that was also desperate to
avoid the slaughterhouse. Well, Wilber seemed to have taken advantage of an over-crowded

livestock truck, reportedly heading to market, to plan his escape.
We are not sure of the outcome of this incident, but we hope this little piggy learned to tuck and

roll or he may have ended up a tenderized ham on the freeway.

자유를 향하여! 이 돼지를 영화 '샬롯의 웹’에 나오는 돼지를 따라 윌버라고 부르자.
도살장을 피하고 싶은 필사적인 윌버는 과밀한 가축 트럭덕에 시장에 가는 도중

도망칠수 있었습니다. 윌버가 어떻게 되었는지 결과는 알수 없지만....
우리는 이 작은 돼지 낙법을 배웠다면 안전하게 착지하였을 것이로 아니면

고속도로 위에서 부드러운 햄으로 변했을것이다.

This photo is a fake. It was created for a political ad when Teddy Roosevelt was running for

the presidency for the Progressive Party, whose mascot was the moose. During this election,

Roosevelt was running against Woodrow Wilson, the Democratic candidate, and

William Howard Taft, the Republican incumbent.
The photography firm of Underwood and Underwood carefully cut a photograph of

Roosevelt on a horse and superimposed it on the image of a moose crossing a river.

This image appeared in the September 8, 1912, edition of the New York Tribune.

이 사진은 합성사진이다. 테디 루스벨트가 마스코트가 무스인 프로 그레시브 파티당의 대통령후보로

 출마시 광고를 위해 만들어졌다. 당시 루즈 벨트는 민주당 후보인 우드로 윌슨과 공화당 현직의

윌리엄 하워드 태프트를 상대로 뛰고 있었다. 사진 사인 언더우드사는 말을 탄 루스벨트의 사진을

이용해 잘라 강을 건너는 무스의 이미지에 합성시켰다.
이 사진는 1912년 9월 8일 뉴욕 트리뷴 판에 실렸다.

In the past, Beluga whales have often been mistaken for mermaids because of their human-like knees.

Sailors have been reporting mermaid sighting for hundreds of years.

Clearly, most of them were seeing something out in the waters, but it probably

wasn’t a sexy, seductive human-fish hybrid. Perhaps some of the sightings

 could be attributed to beluga whales, a native of the Arctic waters.

This whale species has adapted to include several unique anatomical and

physiological traits that separate it from other whales, including its white coloring

and missing dorsal fin. But the odd, knee-like formationsthat resemble human

knees is probably why it has been mistaken for a sea siren.

선원들은 수백 년 동안 인어의 목격담을 보고해왔다.

 바다에서 뭔가 비슷한 것을 보았겠지만, 섹시하고 유혹적인 인어는 결코 아닐 것이다.

아마도 목격한 것중 일부는 북극 해역에 서식하고 있는 벨루가 고래일 것이다.

이 고래 종은 흰 색소와 퇴화된 등 지느러미를 포함하여 다른 고래와는차별되는

몇 가지 독특한 해부학적 및 생리학적 특징이 있다. 하지만 인간의 무릎과 닮은

이상한 구조물은 아마도 이들이 바다의 요정으로 오인된 이유일것 같다.
