W. B. Yeats / When You are Old

예이츠의 'When You Are Old'는 이 시는 Yeats가 열열히 사랑했던 Maud Gonne를 위하여
피에르 드 롱사르(Pierre de Ronsard, 1524∼1585)의 시 ' 그녀의 노년에 대해' 에서

 아이디어를 얻어 쓴 것이라고 합니다.
롱사르는 셰익스피어와 거의 동시대를 살았던 프랑스의 서정시인입니다.

 

Maud Gonne 과 Yeats

 

When You are Old   
그대가 늙는다면

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look 
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; 

 

그대 늙어 백발이 되고 졸음에 겨워
불가에서 머리를 끄덕일 때, 이 책을 꺼내서,
천천히 읽으세요. 한때 그대의 눈이 지녔던
부드러운 눈빛과 그 깊은 그림자를 꿈꾸면서.

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face; 

 

수많은 이들이 그대의 아름다운 자비의 순간을 사랑했고,
거짓이든 진실이든 그대의 아름다움 사랑했지만,
오직 한 사람만이 그대 마음 속 유랑하는 영혼을 사랑했고,
변하는 그대  얼굴의 슬픔까지도 사랑했었다오.

And bending down beside the glowing bars,

Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.   

 

그리고 빨갛게 달어 오른 방책 옆에서 몸을 구부리고, 
다소 애처롭게 중얼거려보세요.
사랑이 어떻게 산 위로 달아나  도망쳐
별 무리 속에 자신의 모습을 감추었는지를.
