Recitation Song/Deck of Cards

Wink Martindale Wink Martindale은 1934년 미국 Tennessee주 태생의 DJ 및 TV 사회자로 Deck of Cards는 그가 1959년에  발표한 가사가 감동적인 Recitation Song이다. 어렸을적 아버님께서 사온 음반에 수록되어 있던 곡으로 어렸을 때부터 자주 듣던 곡이라 지금 들어도 역시 감동이 뭉클한 곡이다. Deck of Cards는 일찌기 1948년에 T. Texas Tyler에 의해 그리고 같은해 Tes Ritter에 의해 발표되어 각각 빌보드 컨츄리 챠트 2위와 10위에 올랐고 1959년 Wink Martindale의 버젼이 빌보드 챠트 7위에 오르며 가장 큰 사랑을 받았다. 가사 내용은 세계2차대전중 오랜기간 출정을 다녀온 군대가 다음날 주일을 맞아 교회 예배에 참례하였는데 성경이나 성가책이 없던 한 병사가 카드 한벌을 펼쳐놓고 보고 있다 하사관에게 발각되어 예배후 군법무관에게 끌려와 왜 카드를 꺼내놓고 있었는지를 설명하는 내용이다. 가사를 번역하여 올리니 음미하며 감상해 보시기 바랍니다. (번역은 내용과 감동이 충실히 전달 될 수 있도록 약간 의역하였음) During the North African campaign, a bunch of soldier boys had been on a long hike and they arrived in a little town called Cascina. The next morning being Sunday, several of the boys went to Church. A sergeant commanded the boys in Church and after the Chaplain had read the prayer, the text was taken up next. (어느 군부대가 아프리카 북부 원정후 카시나라는 마을에 도착했을 때의 이야기다. 마침 그 다음날이 주일이어서 몇명의 병사들이 하사관의 인도로 교회 예배에 참석케 되었다. 군종 목사의 기도에 이어 독서가 이어졌다.) Those of the boys who had a prayer book took them out, but this one boy had only a deck of cards, and so he spread them out.  The Sergeant saw the cards and said, "Soldier put away those cards."  After the services was over, the soldier was taken prisoner and brought before the Provost Marshall. (일부 병사들은 성경책이나 기도서를 꺼냈으나 한 병사는 카드 한벌을 자기 앞에 펼쳐놓았다. "병사, 그 카드는 치우게!" 하사관이 그를 보고 명령했다. 그리고 미사가 끝난 후 그 병사는 군법무관 앞에 소환되었다) The Marshall said, "Sergeant, why have you brought the man here?" "For playing cards in church, Sir."  "And what have you got to say for yourself, son?"  "Much, Sir."  Replied the soldier.  The Marshall said, "I hope so, for  if not I shall punish you more than any man was ever punished." ("하사관, 그 병사를 무슨 죄목으로 여기에 데려왔나?" 군법무관이 물었다. "성당에서 미사중 카드놀이를 한 죄입니다." "그에 대해 자네는 무슨 할 말이 있는가?"  "설명드릴 말씀이 좀 깁니다." 병사가 대답하였다.. 그렇겠지.  타당한 이유를 대지 못한다면 엄중히 다스리겠네" 군법무관이 경고했다.) The soldier said, "Sir, I've been on the march for about six days, I had neither Bible nor prayer book, but I hope to satisfy you, Sir, with the purity of my intentions." With that, the boy started his story: (저는 6일간 훈련에 참여했기 때문에 미처 성경이나 기도서를 준비할 수가 없었습니다. 그러나 저의 순수한 마음을 증명해 드리겠습니다." 그 병사의 이야기는 이렇게 시작되었다.   You see Sir, when I look at the "ACE", it reminds me that there is but one God; ("에이스<1>"를 보면 저는 이세상의 오직 하나이신 주님을 생각합니다.)   And the "DEUCE" reminds me that the Bible is divided into two parts; The Old and the New Testaments; ("듀스<2>"를 보면 성경이 구약과 신약 즉, 둘로 나누어져 있다는 사실을 상기하게 되고,)   And when I see the "TREY", I think of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; ("트레이<3>"을 보면서 저는 삼위일체, 즉, 성부, 성자와 성령을 생각합니다.)   And when I see the "FOUR", I think of the four Evangelists who preached the Gospel.  There was Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; ("4"를 보면서 복음을 전파한 주님의 4대 제자인 마태오, 마르꼬, 누가 그리고 요한을 생각하고)   And when I see the "FIVE", it reminds me of  the five wise virgins who trimmed their lamps.  There were ten of them, five were wise and were saved. Five were foolish and were shut out; ("5"를 보며 현명한 5명의 양치기 처녀들을 생각합니다. 모두 열명이였지만 그중 현명한 5명을 구원받았고, 어리석은 5명을 그렇지 못했다는 사실을,)   And when I see the "SIX", it reminds me that in six days, God made this great heaven and earth; ("6"은 주님께서 6일에 걸쳐 천지창조하셨음을,)    When I see the "SEVEN", it reminds me that on the seventh day, God rested from His great work; ("7"은 주님께서 천지창조를 하시고 7일 째 되는 날 안식하셨음을,) And when I see the "EIGHT", I think of the eight righteous persons God saved when He destroyed this earth.  There was Noah, his wife, their three sons and their wives; ("8"은 주님께서 대홍수시 구원하신 8명의 정의스런 자녀들 즉, 노아와 그의 부인, 그리고 3아들과 3며느리들,)    And when I see the "NINE", I think of the lepers our Saviour cleansed.  And nine out of the ten didn't even thank Him. ("9"는 주님께서 치유하신 나병환자들. 열명중 9명은 주님께 감사조차 하지 않았지만,)   When I see the "TEN", I think of the Ten Commandments God handed down to Moses on a table of stone;   ("10"을 보며 주님께서 모세에게 내려주신 10계명을 상기하고)    When I see the "KING", it reminds me that there is but one King of Heaven, God Almighty; ("킹"은 전지전능하신 왕인 천주를,)   And when I see the "QUEEN", I think of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is Queen of Heaven; ("퀸"은 축복받은 하늘의 여왕인 동정녀 성모 마리아,)   And the "JACK" or "KNAVE" is the Devil; (그리고 "잭"을 보며 악마인 사탄을 생각합니다.) When I count the number of spots on a deck of cards, I find 365, the number of days in a year;  (카드 한벌의 모든 무니수를 세어 보면 365개로 1년중 날자 수와 같고, There's 52 cards, the number of weeks in a year; 카드 매수는 52장으로 1년중 주일 수, There's 4 suits, the number of weeks in a month; 무니의 종류는 4가지로 1개월중 주일 수를, There's 12 picture cards, the number of months in a year; 그림카드는 12장으로 1년중 개월 수 There's 13 tricks, the number of weeks in a quarter; 13장의 트릭(유력한 패)은 한분기중의 주일 수를 나타냅니다. So you see, Sir my pack of cards serves me as a Bible, Almanac and Prayer Book.  즉, 저에게는 카드 한벌이 성서, 해설서 그리고 기도서입니다.) And friends, this story is true. I know. I was that soldier.
