Southern Raised / Sixteen Tons

 최근 인터넷 서핑중우연히 발견한 Southern Raised라는 가족 밴드를 소개한다.

클래식 음악을 전공한 자들로 다양한 악기를 연주하며 그들의 고향인 남부 컨츄리 음악과

클래식 음악, 그리고 성가를 접목한 다양한 음악을 발표하는 그들이지만 역시 가장 그들의

장점과 매력을 발휘하는 장르는 Bluegrass 컨츄리 음악이라 하겠다.

오늘부터 그들이 커버한 곡들을 원곡과 다른 유명한 커버버전들과 함께 소개한다.

 

 

Sixteen Tons 

미국의 컨츄리 싱거/송라이터인 Merle Travis가 작사 작곡한 곡으로 1947년 자신의 앨범

Folk Songs ofthe Hills에 수록되었고 1955년에는 Tennessee Ernie Ford에 의해 커버되어

빌보드 컨츄리 및 핫챠트 1위에 올랐다.

그외에 Frankie Laine등 수많은 가수들에 의해 커버되며 최근까지도 애청 애창되는 곡이다.

철광에서 일하는 가련한 광부가 하루에 16톤의 철광석을 캐내야 하는 불우한 처지를
노래하는 내용으로 하루하루 더 일할수록 하루하루 늙어가면서 회사 매점의 외상 빛만
늘어난다는 자신의 신세를 한탄하는 곡이다.

"성베드로여 나를 찾지 마소. 내 영혼은 이미 회사 상점에 저당 맡겨져 갈수 없다오.
사람들아 내앞에선 얼쩡거리지 마소. 그러다가 생명을 잃은 사람들이 한둘이 아니오.
내 한손은 무쇠, 그리고 다른손은 강철과 같아 어느쪽이던 당신을 골로 보낼수 있다요."
