Longfellow /A Psalm of Life (인생찬가)

 

어제에 이어 롱펠로의 보다 더 많이 알려진 인생찬가를 소개합니다.

 

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow(1807.2.27-1882.3.24) 자신이 졸업한 보든대학에서 교수로 재직하고, 하버드대학에서 교수로 재직하는 등 많은 활동을 하였지만... 정작 자신은 두번씩이나 부인을 잃는 상처(喪妻)의 아픔을 겪었다. 죽음이라는 최고의 상실감을 거치며 무엇을 느꼈을까?      

A Psalm of Life   Tell me not in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem.   Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou are, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul.   Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each tomorrow Find us further than today.   Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave.   In the world's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife!    Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act, - act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erhead!    Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time;   Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o'er life's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again.   Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labour and to wait.

인생찬가    슬픈 어조로 내게 말하지 말라 인생은 한낮 헛된 꿈이라고 잠자는 영혼은 바로 죽은 영혼 만물은 겉모양과는 다른 것   인생은 진실한 것 인생은 진지한 것 무덤이 결코 목표는 아닐 찌니 흙에서 빚어 졌으니 흙으로 돌아가란 말은 우리의 정신을 두고 하는 말은 아니네.   인생 궁극의 목적이나 방법은 슬픔이나 기쁨에 있는 것이 아니라 오늘보다 더 낳은 내일을 위하여 행동하는 것이니   예술은 길고 인생은 한 순간의 것 우리의 심장은 강하고 용감하나 지금 이 순간에도 무덤으로 가는 장송곡은 낮은 북소리처럼 울린다.   인생이라는 광활한 전쟁터에서 인생이라는 노상에서 말없이 끌려가는 가축의 무리가 되지 말라.  싸움에 용감히 뛰어드는 영웅이 되자   아무리 달콤할 지라도 미래는 믿지 말라 흘러간 과거는 죽은 채 묻어두고 그리고 행동하라.  살아 있는 현실에 충실하기위해 가슴속에 용기를 지니고, 천상의 하느님을 섬기며...   앞서 살다간 위대한 조상들의 생애는 우리도 그와 같이 훌륭한 삶을 살아갈 수 있음을 일러 주었다.   이들은 떠나면서 시간의 모래밭에 거룩한 발자국을 남겼나니.   인생을 항해하는 우리들의 누군가가 난파를 당해 절망에 빠졌을 때 그 발자국을 발견하면 다시 용기를 얻게 되리라.   자 모두 다 일어나 행동하라 어떤 운명이 닥쳐온다 해도 용기를 잃지 말고, 이루고, 추구하며... 일하며... 기다리는 것을 배우자.   (번역본은 인터넷에서 퍼왔습니다.)
