Jimmy Ray Dean (1928~2010)  1928년 미국 Texas주에서 태어난 컨츄리 싱거, TV호스트, 배우 및 사업가. 1961년 발표한 Big Bad John은 그의 대표곡으로 1961년 챠트 1위에 올랐으며 1962년 그에게 컨츄리 웨스턴 부문 Grammy Award을 수상받게 하였다. 원래는 Floyd Cramer의 피아노 반주로 녹음할 예정이였으나 Cramer의 제의에 따라 피아노소리 대신 망치로 쇠를 내려치는 소리를 삽입하여 녹음하였다.  Jimmy Dean이 Roy Acuff와  합작하여 만든 이곡은 1961년 빌보드 챠트 1위에 올랐고 1962년 그래미 컨츄리 & 웨스턴 부분 최우수상을 수상하였다.   Jimmy Dean / Big John Jimmy Dean / Big John (라이브 버젼)    Big Bad John  Every morning at the mine you could see him arrive He stood six-foot-six and weighed two-forty-five Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip Everybody knew you didn't give no lip to Big John Big John Big Bad John Big John Nobody seemed to know where John called home He just drifted into town and stayed all alone He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy If ya spoke at all, ya just said hi to Big John Somebody said he came from New Orleans Where he got in a fight o'er a cajun queen And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand Sent a Lousianna fella to the promised land, Big John Big John  Big Bad John Big John Then came the day at the bottom of the mine When a timber cracked and men started cryin' Miners were prayin' and hearts beat fast And everybody thought they'd breathed their last, 'cept John Through the dust and the smoke of this man-made hell Walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well Grabbed the saggin' timber and gave out with a groan And like a giant oak tree, just stood there alone, Big John Big John  Big Bad John Big John And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove Then a miner yelled out, there's a light up above And twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave now there's only one left down there to save, Big John With jacks and timbers they started back down Then came that rumble way down in the ground As smoke and gas belched outta the mine Everybody knew it was the end of the line for Big John Big John  Big Bad John Big John Now, they never re-opened that worthless pit They just placed a marble stand in front of it These few words are written on that stand, At the bottom of this mine lies a big big man, Big John Big John  Big Bad John Big John  마치 한편의 영화를 보는듯한 재미와 감동이 느껴지는 곡입니다.  아래에 내용을 간단히 설명하였는데 가급적 원어로 음미해 보시기 바랍니다. 실제로 1990년 이곡을 기반으로 TV 영화로 제작되었는데 Jimmy Dean도 출연하였습니다. 어디서 왔는지도, 배경도, 그에 관해서는 엄청난 괴력의 사나이란 것과 어느  마을에서 여자 관계로 싸움이 붙어 한방에 상대를 저승으로 보냈다는 소문뿐... 말도 없고 조용한 성격 그리고 우람한 체구의 거인인 그를 사람들은   그냥 Big Bad John이라 불렀다. 어느날 그가 일하던 지하 광산이 무너져 내려 많은 광부들과 함께 매몰되기 직전 그가 나서 무너진 거대한 기둥을 큰 기합과 함께 어깨에 얹고 올리니 사람이 탈출할 만한 작은 틈이 생겨 동료 광부들은 한사람씩 빠져 나갔는데... 마지막 남은 그는 빠져 나올수가 없었다. 탈출한 동료 광부들이 삽과 도구를 사용하여 그를 구해내려고 노력했지만 .... 그 광산은 그후로 영구 폐쇄되었고 동료들은 그곳에 기념비를 세웠다. 이 아래에는 거구의 죤 Big Bad John이 잠자고 있노라....
